Backup Power in
Standby generators and home battery backup for Bolton, from the town center on Route 117 to the farms and wooded roads on private wells.
Get a Generator QuoteBolton's own resilience report says it plainly: drinking water wells throughout the town are privately owned, a power outage can cut off a home's water, and the town should keep telling residents about the need for generators to power their wells and heat.
Boston Backup Power is a division of Boston Automations in Norwood. We design and install RoseWater Energy systems, Savant Power and Generac and Kohler standby generators, and licensed electricians and gas fitters make the connections.

Storms and outages in Bolton
On December 18, 2008, a week after the ice storm, the selectmen recorded that more than 1,500 people in Bolton had lost power and about 51 were still without it. National Grid had brought crews from as far as Arkansas and North Carolina, and the tree warden said most of the damage was on private property, outside the town's easements.
At the same meeting the fire chief asked for improvements to the generator at the public safety radio tower. Earlier that year, the draft town hazard plan had already listed generators for shelters and a tree maintenance program among its mitigation ideas.
Who supplies the power
National Grid serves most of Bolton, and Hudson Light and Power serves a small number of meters in town. The town's report calls the two providers a form of redundancy. A solar and battery interconnection goes to whichever utility bills you.
Which system fits a Bolton home?
We install all three, so we can recommend the one that suits the house and the budget.
RoseWater Energy
On a Bolton farm property with outbuildings and a well, a RoseWater HUB carries the main house with zero transfer time, and a generator keeps it charged through an ice storm.
Whole-home battery backup with zero transfer time and power conditioning, for large homes where nothing can blink. Most projects run $125,000 to $1,000,000.
Savant Power
Savant Power lets a Bolton house keep the well pump and heat on from Savant Power Storage, with a hardwired standby generator to recharge it through a long outage.
Relay modules in your existing panel and Savant Power Storage batteries, so you choose which circuits get backup power and see your usage in the Savant app. Modules typically run $2,000 to $10,000, and battery backup $10,000 to more than $100,000.
Where the equipment goes in Bolton
The Bolton Center Historic District runs about 73 acres along Main Street, a linear town center with houses from the 18th century on. Bolton had no local historic district bylaw as of 2020, so National Register listing alone does not add a review for a generator.
Most Bolton houses sit on lots with room for a pad well clear of windows and doors, and a propane tank where the delivery truck can reach it.
How to start
For a RoseWater system, start with the Power Plan. For Savant Power, use the Savant quote form. For a standby generator, use the generator quote form. If you are not sure which one fits, use the contact form or call (781) 333-8003 and we will talk it through. We reply within one business day.
Questions about backup power in Bolton
The town says we need a generator for the well. What size?
The town says we need a generator for the well. What size?
Large enough to start the well pump while the heat and the essentials are running. We read the pump's nameplate and the panel on the site visit and size from there.
Are we on National Grid or Hudson Light and Power?
Are we on National Grid or Hudson Light and Power?
Most of Bolton is National Grid, and a small number of meters are on Hudson Light and Power. Your bill tells you. It matters for solar and battery paperwork, not for a generator.
Most 2008 damage was on private land. Does that affect us?
Most 2008 damage was on private land. Does that affect us?
It means trees on your own property can take down your service drop. A standby generator covers the outage either way, and an electrician can check the drop when the system goes in.
