Home battery backup and standby generators for Oak Bluffs, East Chop and the streets around Ocean Park and the harbor.
Get a Savant QuoteOak Bluffs mixes small Victorian cottages, harbor-front houses and larger homes up on East Chop. In the February 2026 blizzard more than nine in ten homes in town lost power at one point.

Storms and outages in Oak Bluffs
On February 23, 2026, the Vineyard Gazette reported major clusters of more than 4,000 customers out in Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, with over 90 percent of Oak Bluffs without power at one point and about 56 percent of Eversource customers island-wide out at the peak.
In late October 2012, the far edge of Sandy closed the ocean side of East Chop Drive between Brewster and Munroe avenues. In March 2018 Oak Bluffs did well by comparison, with 5 percent out at 9 p.m. on March 12, which is a reminder that which street loses power depends on where the trees fall.
Who supplies the power
Eversource serves Oak Bluffs. During the 2026 blizzard a pole fire in the state forest hit a line that feeds Edgartown, Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven, so one failure can reach several towns at once.
Which system fits a Oak Bluffs home?
We install all three, so we can recommend the one that suits the house and the budget.
RoseWater Energy
For a large East Chop house with lighting control, AV and a big network, a RoseWater HUB carries the whole house with zero transfer time and conditions the power all year.
Whole-home battery backup with zero transfer time and power conditioning, for large homes where nothing can blink. Most projects run $125,000 to $1,000,000.
Standby generator
On a larger lot, a standby generator gives you unlimited run time on propane or natural gas, and it can recharge a Savant or RoseWater battery during a long outage.
A Generac or Kohler standby generator on natural gas or propane that starts on its own when the power goes out. Most installs run $7,500 to $20,000.
Where the equipment goes in Oak Bluffs
The East Chop bluff has needed major repair, with a 2,900-foot stretch damaged and a FEMA grant sought to finish the work. Houses along the bluff and on Sea View Avenue face the water directly, so equipment should go on the landward side of the house and above any flood level.
In the Camp Meeting Grounds, Wesleyan Grove, about 318 cottages sit shoulder to shoulder on leased lots. There is little room for a generator, and any exterior change needs the association's approval, so an indoor battery is usually the only practical choice.
Permits in Oak Bluffs
The Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association requires approval of all exterior changes to cottages and leased lots in the Camp Ground, through its review committees, ending in a Certificate of Appropriateness. Outside the Camp Ground we have not found an Oak Bluffs rule specific to generators. Electrical and gas permits are pulled by the licensed electrician and gas fitter.
How to start
For a RoseWater system, start with the Power Plan. For Savant Power, use the Savant quote form. For a standby generator, use the generator quote form. If you are not sure which one fits, use the contact form or call (781) 333-8003 and we will talk it through. We reply within one business day.
Questions about backup power in Oak Bluffs
Can a battery system go in a Camp Ground cottage?
Can a battery system go in a Camp Ground cottage?
Often, yes, because it goes inside and does not change the exterior. We look at the panel and the space on a site visit. Anything visible outside would go to the Camp Meeting Association for approval.
Our house is on East Chop facing the water. Where would the equipment go?
Our house is on East Chop facing the water. Where would the equipment go?
On the landward side and above the flood level, usually in a garage or a dry utility room. A generator pad, if you want one, goes where it is sheltered and clears windows and doors.
Do you have to come over on the ferry for every visit?
Do you have to come over on the ferry for every visit?
We plan the work so trips are few. The site visit, the installation and the commissioning are scheduled around the boat, and we coordinate a licensed island electrician for the connection.
