Backup Power in
Home battery backup and standby generators for Lexington, from the Battle Green and East Village to the rest of town.
Get a Savant QuoteIn the summer of 2025, Lexington Center lost power three times in about five weeks. Eversource blamed equipment issues once, storm damage once and a tree on its lines once, and LexObserver reported on what it cost the businesses there. The houses on the same lines feel it too.
Boston Backup Power is a division of Boston Automations in Norwood. We design and install RoseWater Energy systems, Savant Power and Generac and Kohler standby generators, and licensed electricians and gas fitters make the connections.

Storms and outages in Lexington
The three 2025 outages ran from about 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on June 5, about 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on June 20, and about 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. on July 8, when a thunderstorm brought a tree down on the lines.
Wind does its share. On March 2, 2017, high winds caused 567 outages in town, about 4 percent of Eversource's Lexington customers.
Who supplies the power
Eversource supplies Lexington, with about 13,370 customers in town in 2017. It also runs the substation at 1709 Massachusetts Avenue, where a transformer fire in August 2022 drew mutual aid from Cambridge, Watertown, Burlington and Bedford. Eversource said no outages were linked to that fire but warned it might need a temporary outage for permanent repairs.
Which system fits a Lexington home?
We install all three, so we can recommend the one that suits the house and the budget.
RoseWater Energy
For a large Lexington house with lighting control, AV, networking and a home office that cannot drop, a RoseWater HUB keeps it all on with zero transfer time and conditions the power between outages.
Whole-home battery backup with zero transfer time and power conditioning, for large homes where nothing can blink. Most projects run $125,000 to $1,000,000.
Standby generator
A standby generator on natural gas suits a Lexington house that wants to ride through a long storm outage. It can be paired with a battery later.
A Generac or Kohler standby generator on natural gas or propane that starts on its own when the power goes out. Most installs run $7,500 to $20,000.
Where the equipment goes in Lexington
Most Lexington houses have a basement or garage where a Savant Power Storage cabinet or a RoseWater HUB fits, which keeps the equipment out of sight in the historic districts. A generator needs a side or rear yard spot that keeps its distance from windows and doors.
Permits in Lexington
The Lexington Historic Districts Commission reviews backup generators in its districts. In 2013 it approved a generator for a house on Massachusetts Avenue after preferring a spot on the side of the house next to the existing air conditioning condenser, where it was less visible from the street.
How to start
For a RoseWater system, start with the Power Plan. For Savant Power, use the Savant quote form. For a standby generator, use the generator quote form. If you are not sure which one fits, use the contact form or call (781) 333-8003 and we will talk it through. We reply within one business day.
Questions about backup power in Lexington
Will the Historic Districts Commission approve a generator?
Will the Historic Districts Commission approve a generator?
It has before. In 2013 it approved one on Massachusetts Avenue placed beside an existing air conditioning condenser, out of the main view from the street. Plan on a side or rear location, and expect the commission to weigh in on placement.
Short outages are our real problem. Is a battery worth it?
Short outages are our real problem. Is a battery worth it?
That is where a battery earns its keep. It switches over on its own, so a few hours without grid power, like the 2025 Lexington Center outages, do not interrupt the circuits you put on it.
