Newport and Coastal Rhode Island Backup Power in Little Compton

Whole-home battery backup and standby generators for Little Compton, from the Commons and the farms to Sakonnet Point and Warren's Point.

Build Your Power Plan

Little Compton is rural Rhode Island at the end of the road, with about 3,600 residents, stone walls and long overhead lines across open farmland and woods. In a February 2025 wind storm it was one of the three Rhode Island towns with the most outages.

The Commons at the center of town is one of only three surviving town commons in Rhode Island, and the Little Compton Common Historic District around it is on the National Register.

Boston Backup Power is a division of Boston Automations in Norwood. We design and install RoseWater Energy systems, Savant Power and Generac and Kohler standby generators, and licensed electricians and gas fitters make the connections.

Storms and outages in Little Compton

In the February 9, 2013 blizzard, nearly 100 percent of Tiverton and Little Compton customers were without power, according to Patch. On February 17, 2025, a wind storm left about 3,610 Rhode Island Energy customers out at 3:22 p.m., and the most outages were in Little Compton, Cumberland and Lincoln.

The 1938 hurricane destroyed the structures on West Island off Sakonnet Point. Today the state's sea level rise road study ranks Sakonnet Point Road as the town's most vulnerable road, and it is an evacuation route.

Who supplies the power

Rhode Island Energy serves Little Compton, as it does nearly all of Rhode Island. Any battery or solar interconnection application goes to Rhode Island Energy.

Which system fits a Little Compton home?

We install all three, so we can recommend the one that suits the house and the budget.

RoseWater Energy

For a large Little Compton property with lighting control, AV, networking, a well and outbuildings, a RoseWater HUB carries it all with zero transfer time, and a generator behind it covers a long outage.

Whole-home battery backup with zero transfer time and power conditioning, for large homes where nothing can blink. Most projects run $125,000 to $1,000,000.

About RoseWater Energy

Savant Power

For a farmhouse or cottage, Savant Power adds battery backup to the circuits you pick, including the well pump and heat, with modules in the existing panel.

Relay modules in your existing panel and Savant Power Storage batteries, so you choose which circuits get backup power and see your usage in the Savant app. Modules typically run $2,000 to $10,000, and battery backup $10,000 to more than $100,000.

About Savant Power

Standby generator

A propane standby generator is the workhorse out here. It runs as long as the tank lasts, which makes it the natural partner for any battery system in a town that loses power this often.

A Generac or Kohler standby generator on natural gas or propane that starts on its own when the power goes out. Most installs run $7,500 to $20,000.

About standby generators

Where the equipment goes in Little Compton

Farmhouses and shingled shore houses here usually have barns, garages or outbuildings with plenty of room for a HUB or a battery cabinet, and space for a generator pad well away from windows.

Near Sakonnet Point and the shore, keep equipment above the flood level and on the sheltered side. Inland, the bigger issue is the distance a propane truck has to travel and where the tank can sit.

How to start

For a RoseWater system, start with the Power Plan. For Savant Power, use the Savant quote form. For a standby generator, use the generator quote form. If you are not sure which one fits, use the contact form or call (781) 333-8003 and we will talk it through. We reply within one business day.

FAQ

Questions about backup power in Little Compton

Can a backup system run our well pump?

Can a backup system run our well pump?

Yes, if the well pump circuit is on the plan and the system is sized for its starting load. We take that from the pump's nameplate on the site visit.

Do you install in Little Compton?

Do you install in Little Compton?

Yes. Coastal Rhode Island is part of our service area. We coordinate licensed Rhode Island electricians and, for generators, a licensed gas installer and the propane supplier.

Is a battery worth it if we already have a generator?

Is a battery worth it if we already have a generator?

A generator leaves the house dark for the seconds it takes to start and transfer, and its power is not as clean as the grid. A battery covers that gap and conditions the power, which matters if the house has a lot of electronics.
