Storms and outages in Hanover
On April 28, 2025, a wind-felled tree on lines near Route 120 knocked out more than 4,600 Grafton County customers for about an hour and a half. Downtown Hanover and the Route 120 corridor went dark, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center canceled appointments and downtown businesses closed.
On April 16, 2018, ice and wind left about 2,100 Liberty customers out, half of them in Lebanon and Hanover. A December 17, 2022 snowstorm left about 680 Liberty customers without power at 11 p.m., mostly in the Hanover and Lebanon area.
Who supplies the power
Eversource, Liberty and the New Hampshire Electric Cooperative all list Hanover, the Co-op for limited areas only. Which one serves your house is on your bill, and that utility reviews any solar and battery interconnection.
Which system fits a Hanover home?
We install all three, so we can recommend the one that suits the house and the budget.
RoseWater Energy
For a large Hanover house with a home office tied to Dartmouth or the hospital, a RoseWater HUB keeps the work running through a 90-minute outage without a reboot.
Whole-home battery backup with zero transfer time and power conditioning, for large homes where nothing can blink. Most projects run $125,000 to $1,000,000.
Standby generator
In Etna and Hanover Center, a standby generator covers the longer rural outages, on its own or recharging a battery.
A Generac or Kohler standby generator on natural gas or propane that starts on its own when the power goes out. Most installs run $7,500 to $20,000.
Where the equipment goes in Hanover
More than three quarters of Hanover's residents live in the compact area in the southwest corner of town, where lots are smaller and a battery inside the house is often easier than a generator outside. The rest of town, including Etna and Hanover Center, is rural, with room for a generator pad well clear of the house.
About 320 of Hanover's housing units are seasonal. For a house that sits empty for stretches, a system that runs and reports on its own matters.
How to start
For a RoseWater system, start with the Power Plan. For Savant Power, use the Savant quote form. For a standby generator, use the generator quote form. If you are not sure which one fits, use the contact form or call (781) 333-8003 and we will talk it through. We reply within one business day.
Questions about backup power in Hanover
Three utilities serve Hanover. Does that affect the system?
Three utilities serve Hanover. Does that affect the system?
Not the equipment. It affects who restores your line and who reviews a solar and battery hookup. Check your electric bill to see whether you are on Eversource, Liberty or the Co-op.
We are in Etna on a long road. Is a generator better than a battery there?
We are in Etna on a long road. Is a generator better than a battery there?
For long rural outages, a generator gives open-ended run time. A battery in front of it covers the first moments and short outages without starting the engine. Many rural houses use both.
