Storms and outages in New London
In the December 29 and 30, 2025 ice storm, tree limbs caused three larger outages in New London affecting 50 to 100 people each, plus several smaller ones around Lake Sunapee. Some residents were still out on Tuesday.
During that storm the town asked people to stay home unless absolutely necessary, opened a conference room at the Town Offices as a warming station, and the fire department answered more than 50 calls for trees on lines, alarms and medical help. Next door in Sunapee, the fire station and dispatch center ran on backup power.

A propane standby generator covers a multi-day ice storm on its own, or keeps a battery charged through one.
A Generac or Kohler standby generator on natural gas or propane that starts on its own when the power goes out. Most installs run $7,500 to $20,000.
Where the equipment goes in New London
On Lake Sunapee, Little Sunapee or Pleasant Lake, the first 250 feet back from the water is protected shoreland under state law, and construction there needs a permit. A HUB or a battery inside the house adds nothing to the shoreland, and a generator pad goes farther back where the lot allows.
In the 2025 storm it was tree limbs scattered across many roads, so the outages were many and small, each one waiting its turn for a crew.
