Storms and outages in New Castle
In the January 2024 floods, New Castle closed Wentworth Road, Route 1B between New Castle and Rye, at high tide, and the Coast Guard boathouse and lighthouse platform in town were damaged. The town's hazard plan records $17 million in damage to PSNH equipment in Rockingham County from the January 1998 ice storm.
The town's hazard plan warns that a category 2 or 3 surge could split the main island in two and damage the Route 1B causeway, the northern exit to Portsmouth, potentially cutting off both evacuation routes. It lists utilities near the shoreline as vulnerable.

Where the lot allows, a standby generator covers a long outage on its own or keeps a battery charged. In New Castle it may need review beyond the building permit.
