Southern New Hampshire and the Seacoast Backup Power in Rye

Whole-home battery backup and standby generators for Rye, from Wallis Sands and Jenness Beach to Rye Harbor and Odiorne Point.

Build Your Power Plan

In January 2024 two coastal floods in four days flattened sections of seawall in Rye and left Ocean Boulevard under water even at low tide.

Of Rye's 2,852 housing units counted in 2010, 471 were seasonal, so a fair number of houses ride out winter storms with no one home.

Boston Backup Power is a division of Boston Automations in Norwood. We design and install RoseWater Energy systems, Savant Power and Generac and Kohler standby generators, and licensed electricians and gas fitters make the connections.

Storms and outages in Rye

The January 10 and 13, 2024 floods flattened the seawalls that separated Ocean Boulevard from the beach, closed parts of Route 1A for days, and kept the town's sewer pumps in emergency mode for 24 hours during each storm.

Rye's 2022 hazard plan says the Halloween storm of October 31, 2011 caused widespread outages and closed roads, that high wind events in 2010, 2014 and 2016 brought extensive outages, and that Sandy and Irene caused localized flooding and power loss.

Who supplies the power

Eversource delivers power in Rye and maintains the lines, including under Rye Community Power, which changes only who supplies the electricity. Unitil does not deliver electricity in Rye. Interconnection for a battery or solar goes to Eversource.

Which system fits a Rye home?

We install all three, so we can recommend the one that suits the house and the budget.

RoseWater Energy

For a large Ocean Boulevard or Rye Harbor house with lighting control, AV and a big network, a RoseWater HUB carries the house with zero transfer time and cleans up the power between storms.

Whole-home battery backup with zero transfer time and power conditioning, for large homes where nothing can blink. Most projects run $125,000 to $1,000,000.

About RoseWater Energy

Savant Power

For a Rye house that wants backup on chosen circuits, Savant Power goes into the existing panel with battery storage inside, and you pick what stays on in the app.

Relay modules in your existing panel and Savant Power Storage batteries, so you choose which circuits get backup power and see your usage in the Savant app. Modules typically run $2,000 to $10,000, and battery backup $10,000 to more than $100,000.

About Savant Power

Standby generator

A standby generator covers long wind-storm outages on its own, and on a large property it keeps a battery system charged.

A Generac or Kohler standby generator on natural gas or propane that starts on its own when the power goes out. Most installs run $7,500 to $20,000.

About standby generators

Where the equipment goes in Rye

Apart from Locke's Neck, the area behind the Wallis Sands seawall, Fairhill Manor and parts of Odiorne Point, most of Rye's developed coastline, including about half of Jenness Beach, is in the V, AE or AO flood zones. A HUB or battery belongs in a raised room or garage there, above the flood level.

Inland houses on the wooded roads toward Route 1 usually have a dry basement or garage that works, with about 3.5 by 3 feet of floor and 8 feet of height for a HUB, and a side yard for a generator pad.

How to start

For a RoseWater system, start with the Power Plan. For Savant Power, use the Savant quote form. For a standby generator, use the generator quote form. If you are not sure which one fits, use the contact form or call (781) 333-8003 and we will talk it through. We reply within one business day.

Questions about backup power in Rye

Who makes the connections on a Rye project?

Who makes the connections on a Rye project?

A New Hampshire licensed electrician makes the electrical connections, and for a generator a licensed gas fitter runs the gas line. We design the system and coordinate them, and RoseWater's technicians commission a HUB.

We are on Ocean Boulevard in a V zone. Can we have a system?

We are on Ocean Boulevard in a V zone. Can we have a system?

Yes, with the equipment raised above the flood level and protected from wave action. We work out the location with your electrician and the building department.

Does Rye Community Power change anything for backup?

Does Rye Community Power change anything for backup?

No. Community power changes who supplies the electricity. Eversource still delivers it and maintains the lines, and interconnection still goes to Eversource.
