Backup Power in
Whole-home battery backup and standby generators for Cohasset, from Jerusalem Road and Little Harbor to the village and the harbor.
Build Your Power PlanAfter the October 2021 nor'easter left Cohasset completely without power, the town manager told the Boston Globe that Cohasset loses power far more frequently than it should. The rocky coast, old trees and long roads out to the points make it a hard town to keep lit.
Boston Backup Power is a division of Boston Automations in Norwood. We design and install RoseWater Energy systems, Savant Power and Generac and Kohler standby generators, and licensed electricians and gas fitters make the connections.

Storms and outages in Cohasset
The October 27, 2021 nor'easter left the town 100 percent without power on Wednesday, and Cohasset was still completely dark late Thursday morning. The wind took down the press box at the high school field and ran boats aground in the harbor. The town manager said the town's biggest challenge was simply having no power.
It was not new. During Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011, the town manager estimated at least half the town was still without power and said National Grid's figures did not make sense. In the February 2026 blizzard a utility pole came down against a house on Nichols Road.
Who supplies the power
National Grid serves Cohasset. After the 2021 storm a National Grid spokeswoman called the town's outage a multi-day restoration event. Cohasset does not share Hull's or Hingham's municipal utilities.
Which system fits a Cohasset home?
We install all three, so we can recommend the one that suits the house and the budget.
Savant Power
For a village house or a smaller home, Savant Power gives battery backup on the circuits you choose, with relay modules in the existing panel and Savant Power Storage that can sit indoors.
Relay modules in your existing panel and Savant Power Storage batteries, so you choose which circuits get backup power and see your usage in the Savant app. Modules typically run $2,000 to $10,000, and battery backup $10,000 to more than $100,000.
Standby generator
A standby generator on its own is a solid answer for many Cohasset homes, and on a large property it is the natural partner to a battery system.
A Generac or Kohler standby generator on natural gas or propane that starts on its own when the power goes out. Most installs run $7,500 to $20,000.
Where the equipment goes in Cohasset
Cohasset has identified 166 coastal flooding pathways, and Border Street and Lawrence Wharf flood in the harbor area. In the Floodplain and Watershed Protection Overlay District, building is allowed only by special permit, with structures at least 10 feet above mean sea level. A generator or battery pad on a coastal lot may fall under that, so we check before we design.
The big houses on Jerusalem Road and around Little Harbor usually have a garage or lower level with room for a HUB, about 3.5 by 3 feet of floor and 8 feet of height plus 36 inches in front. If there is no room, the HUB40 can go outdoors in RoseWater's enclosure.
Permits in Cohasset
Cohasset's zoning makes building in the Floodplain and Watershed Protection Overlay District a special permit matter, not a by-right one, and requires that structures will not be damaged by flooding and sit at least 10 feet above mean sea level. We have not found a Cohasset page specific to generators. The licensed electrician and gas fitter pull the electrical and gas permits.
How to start
For a RoseWater system, start with the Power Plan. For Savant Power, use the Savant quote form. For a standby generator, use the generator quote form. If you are not sure which one fits, use the contact form or call (781) 333-8003 and we will talk it through. We reply within one business day.
Questions about backup power in Cohasset
Cohasset was completely out for days in 2021. Would a HUB have carried us?
Cohasset was completely out for days in 2021. Would a HUB have carried us?
For the loads you put on it, yes, and with no gap at the start. For a multi-day outage we pair the HUB with a generator or solar so the batteries keep recharging.
Our lot is in the floodplain overlay. Can we still put in equipment?
Our lot is in the floodplain overlay. Can we still put in equipment?
Often yes, but it may need a special permit and has to sit above the required elevation. We design with that in mind and confirm with the town before installation.
Is RoseWater the only option for a large Cohasset house?
Is RoseWater the only option for a large Cohasset house?
No. RoseWater projects usually run $125,000 to $1,000,000. If that is more than the house needs, Savant Power or a standby generator may fit better, and we install both.
