Get a Generator Quote

Scituate has gone almost completely dark twice in the last decade, in March 2018 and December 2023. Each time the estimate for getting power back was about three days.

In a Scituate outage, the heat and the sump pump are usually the first two things that have to keep running.

Boston Backup Power is a division of Boston Automations in Norwood. We design and install RoseWater Energy systems, Savant Power and Generac and Kohler standby generators, and licensed electricians and gas fitters make the connections.

Storms and outages in Scituate

On March 2, 2018, the entire town lost power. Scituate declared a state of emergency, flood-zone residents were told to evacuate, and National Grid estimated most of the town would be out for more than 72 hours. On Saturday night, 93 percent of Scituate was still without power.

On December 18, 2023, 99 percent of the town was out and full restoration was estimated at up to 72 hours. Two days later about 91 percent, around 8,600 customers, still had no power. The town's own hazard plan says falling trees that bring down power lines are an ongoing issue in Scituate.

Who supplies the power

National Grid serves Scituate. In December 2023 much of the South Shore outage, Scituate included, came from storm damage at a substation in Hanover, which shows how a failure outside town can reach every house in it.

Which system fits a Scituate home?

We install all three, so we can recommend the one that suits the house and the budget.

Standby generator

For most Scituate homes a standby generator is where to start. When the estimate is three days, you want something that runs as long as the outage does.

A Generac or Kohler standby generator on natural gas or propane that starts on its own when the power goes out. Most installs run $7,500 to $20,000.

About standby generators

RoseWater Energy

For a large house on the Cliffs or the water with a lot of technology inside, a RoseWater HUB carries the house with zero transfer time, usually with a generator behind it.

Whole-home battery backup with zero transfer time and power conditioning, for large homes where nothing can blink. Most projects run $125,000 to $1,000,000.

About RoseWater Energy

Savant Power

Savant Power Storage carries chosen circuits from the moment the grid drops, and a hardwired standby generator can recharge it. It suits a house where the network, medical equipment or a home office cannot wait for the generator.

Relay modules in your existing panel and Savant Power Storage batteries, so you choose which circuits get backup power and see your usage in the Savant app. Modules typically run $2,000 to $10,000, and battery backup $10,000 to more than $100,000.

About Savant Power

Where the equipment goes in Scituate

Scituate's 2016 hazard plan counts 520 repetitive loss structures and says a damaging flood happens on average nearly twice a year, most often at Cedar Point, Surfside Road, Glades Road, Peggotty Beach, Oceanside Drive, Turner Road, the Basin, Edward Foster Road and Humarock. In those neighborhoods the generator pad goes above the flood level and the transfer switch stays out of the basement.

Humarock has been cut off from the rest of Scituate since the Portland Gale of 1898 and is reached only through Marshfield. For a house there, plan on crews taking longer to arrive.

Permits in Scituate

In Scituate's Flood Plain and Watershed Protection District, new structures are limited to what zoning allows by right or by special permit, so a generator pad in that district gets checked with the town first. Electrical and gas permits are pulled by the licensed electrician and gas fitter.

How to start

For a RoseWater system, start with the Power Plan. For Savant Power, use the Savant quote form. For a standby generator, use the generator quote form. If you are not sure which one fits, use the contact form or call (781) 333-8003 and we will talk it through. We reply within one business day.

FAQ

Questions about backup power in Scituate

How long will a standby generator run during a three-day outage?

How long will a standby generator run during a three-day outage?

On natural gas, as long as the gas keeps flowing. On propane, it depends on the tank. We size the tank with you so it covers several days at your expected load.

We live in Humarock. Can you still install there?

We live in Humarock. Can you still install there?

Yes. We reach Humarock through Marshfield like everyone else. We plan the pad above flood level and make sure the system runs without anyone needing to get to it.

Do generators need to be raised in a flood zone?

Do generators need to be raised in a flood zone?

In practice, yes. The unit and its connections should sit above the flood level, and the building department may set a required elevation. We confirm it during design.
