Hull has its own municipal light plant, but no power plant to go with it. Everything the town uses comes in over National Grid supply lines through Weymouth and Hingham, and when those lines go down the whole peninsula goes dark.

Boston Backup Power is a division of Boston Automations in Norwood. We design and install RoseWater Energy systems, Savant Power and Generac and Kohler standby generators, and licensed electricians and gas fitters make the connections.

Storms and outages in Hull

Hull had six townwide outages in 2020, against seven in the previous six years, and APPA puts the 2020 total at over 60 hours. On March 23, 2020, a tree fell near Hobart Street in Hingham at about 8:45 p.m., tangled in the high-voltage lines that feed Hull, and left the whole town dark for about 14 hours. National Grid said tree trimming would not have prevented it.

Since that winter the light plant has set up five 2 MW trailer generators each season, enough for the town's winter peak, to carry Hull through a major National Grid outage. In October 2024 it was setting them up for the fifth winter in a row. The January 4, 2018 nor'easter brought a surge the town's hazard plan says was higher than the Blizzard of 1978, flooding Edgewater Road, Bay Street and Nantasket Road.

Who supplies the power

The Hull Municipal Light Plant, in service since 1894, supplies the town. It buys its power from outside and brings it in over National Grid lines, which the town manager described in 2024 as non-hardened. Battery or solar interconnection goes to the light plant.

Which system fits a Hull home?

We install all three, so we can recommend the one that suits the house and the budget.

Standby generator

For most Hull homes a standby generator is the right answer. The town's own winter generators protect against a supply failure, but not against a downed line on your street or a storm that floods the plant. Your own unit starts by itself and runs as long as the outage does.

A Generac or Kohler standby generator on natural gas or propane that starts on its own when the power goes out. Most installs run $7,500 to $20,000.

About standby generators

RoseWater Energy

For a large house on the water in Allerton or at Pemberton Point with a lot of technology inside, a RoseWater HUB carries the house with zero transfer time and conditions the power all year.

Whole-home battery backup with zero transfer time and power conditioning, for large homes where nothing can blink. Most projects run $125,000 to $1,000,000.

About RoseWater Energy

Savant Power

If you want a quiet system on a small lot, Savant Power puts relay modules in your panel and Savant Power Storage in the garage or the house, and a hardwired standby generator can recharge it.

Relay modules in your existing panel and Savant Power Storage batteries, so you choose which circuits get backup power and see your usage in the Savant app. Modules typically run $2,000 to $10,000, and battery backup $10,000 to more than $100,000.

About Savant Power

Where the equipment goes in Hull

Hull's hazard plan calls the town highly vulnerable to coastal storms, with only three evacuation routes and 261 repetitive loss flood insurance properties. Even the light plant is on the list to move to higher ground. A generator pad here has to sit above the flood level, and a battery should never go in a basement that takes water.

Lots on the peninsula are small. We look for a spot that keeps the generator clear of your windows and doors and your neighbor's, and that is sheltered from the worst of the spray.

How to start

For a RoseWater system, start with the Power Plan. For Savant Power, use the Savant quote form. For a standby generator, use the generator quote form. If you are not sure which one fits, use the contact form or call (781) 333-8003 and we will talk it through. We reply within one business day.

FAQ

Questions about backup power in Hull

Hull rents generators every winter. Why do I need my own?

Hull rents generators every winter. Why do I need my own?

The town's generators cover a failure of the outside supply. They do not help when a tree takes down the line on your street or a flood damages local equipment, and they run only through the winter season. A standby unit at your house covers all of that.

Can a generator go on a small Hull lot near the beach?

Can a generator go on a small Hull lot near the beach?

Usually. The pad has to sit above flood level and keep its clearance from windows and doors. We look at the lot and find the spot before we quote.

Who do we file with for a battery and solar system in Hull?

The Hull Municipal Light Plant, since it supplies the town. We coordinate that with your solar partner.
