South Shore Backup Power in Duxbury

Whole-home battery backup and standby generators for Duxbury's captains' houses, bayfront homes and the houses out on Duxbury Beach.

Build Your Power Plan

By 1837 nearly 40 shipyards lined Duxbury Bay, and the captains' houses they paid for still line the streets. Today the town loses power mostly to trees. Its own climate plan says more than 90 percent of outages come from fallen trees and limbs in storms.

Boston Backup Power is a division of Boston Automations in Norwood. We design and install RoseWater Energy systems, Savant Power and Generac and Kohler standby generators, and licensed electricians and gas fitters make the connections.

Storms and outages in Duxbury

On Saturday night after the March 2, 2018 nor'easter, 97 percent of Duxbury was still without power. That storm brought a mandatory evacuation and a state of emergency, and the town's climate plan notes that two coastal storms in early 2018 alone damaged seawalls badly enough to do it.

In the October 27, 2021 nor'easter about 91 percent of Duxbury had no power on Wednesday morning, and 31 percent were still out on Saturday. The town manager called it a multi-day restoration after talking with Eversource. Duxbury was also among the hardest-hit towns in the December 18, 2023 storm.

Who supplies the power

Eversource provides electricity for Duxbury, as the town's 2018 climate vulnerability plan states. Solar and battery interconnection goes to Eversource.

Which system fits a Duxbury home?

We install all three, so we can recommend the one that suits the house and the budget.

RoseWater Energy

For a large Duxbury house on the bay or at Powder Point with lighting control, AV, networking and security, a RoseWater HUB keeps the house on through tree-caused outages with zero transfer time and conditions the power all year.

Whole-home battery backup with zero transfer time and power conditioning, for large homes where nothing can blink. Most projects run $125,000 to $1,000,000.

About RoseWater Energy

Savant Power

For an antique captain's house or a smaller home, Savant Power adds battery backup on the circuits you choose, with relay modules in the existing panel and Savant Power Storage that can go indoors.

Relay modules in your existing panel and Savant Power Storage batteries, so you choose which circuits get backup power and see your usage in the Savant app. Modules typically run $2,000 to $10,000, and battery backup $10,000 to more than $100,000.

About Savant Power

Standby generator

For multi-day outages like October 2021, a standby generator carries the house on its own or keeps a battery system charged. On a historic street we place it out of view.

A Generac or Kohler standby generator on natural gas or propane that starts on its own when the power goes out. Most installs run $7,500 to $20,000.

About standby generators

Where the equipment goes in Duxbury

Duxbury Beach is a six-mile barrier beach, and the Powder Point Bridge is the only road to it from Duxbury. The town's climate plan says Duxbury routinely floods with even a lunar high tide, counts 36 repetitive loss properties, 26 of them on north Duxbury Beach in a high-velocity zone, and flags Snug Harbor, King Caesar Road, Powder Point Road and Gurnet Road for future flooding.

On the beach and along the bay, a HUB or battery goes in a garage or raised room, never a basement, because a flooded HUB is not a warranty claim with RoseWater. Inland, most houses have a dry space that works, with about 3.5 by 3 feet of floor, 8 feet of height and 36 inches clear in front for a HUB.

How to start

For a RoseWater system, start with the Power Plan. For Savant Power, use the Savant quote form. For a standby generator, use the generator quote form. If you are not sure which one fits, use the contact form or call (781) 333-8003 and we will talk it through. We reply within one business day.

FAQ

Questions about backup power in Duxbury

We are on Duxbury Beach. Is a system practical out there?

We are on Duxbury Beach. Is a system practical out there?

Yes, with care. Equipment has to sit above the flood level in a high-velocity zone, and the Powder Point Bridge is the only road from Duxbury to the beach, so we design for the house to run without help for a while.

Most of our outages are from trees. Does that change the design?

Most of our outages are from trees. Does that change the design?

Not much. Tree outages tend to be short but frequent, which is exactly where a HUB's zero transfer time pays off. A generator covers the rare long ones.

Which of the three systems costs least in Duxbury?

Which of the three systems costs least in Duxbury?

A standby generator, which usually runs $7,500 to $20,000 installed. RoseWater projects run $125,000 to $1,000,000. We quote Savant Power after a site visit, since it depends on the panel and how much storage you want.
