Build Your Power Plan

The south side of Barnstable, along Nantucket Sound, has some of the largest waterfront houses on Cape Cod. Osterville, Oyster Harbors, Cotuit, Centerville and Hyannis Port are villages of one town, and they share the same Eversource lines through a lot of wooded ground.

Boston Backup Power is a division of Boston Automations in Norwood. We design and install RoseWater Energy systems, Savant Power and Generac and Kohler standby generators, and licensed electricians and gas fitters make the connections.

Storms and outages in Osterville and Barnstable

In the February 2026 blizzard, MEMA counted 20,898 Barnstable customers out at 12:30 p.m. on February 23, which it put at 66 percent of the town. MassLive reported 22,099 still without power on Wednesday, and the Boston Globe counted about 8,400 Barnstable customers still out on Thursday morning.

You do not need a named storm for a village outage. On an April night in 2020, about 7,000 Eversource customers, mostly in Barnstable, lost power after 9:30 p.m. Centerville, Osterville, Marstons Mills and Cotuit were hit hardest, and crews traced it to a pole fire and high-voltage lines tangled in a tree. In the March 12, 2018 nor'easter, 61 percent of Barnstable was out by 9 p.m.

Who supplies the power

Eversource serves all of Barnstable's villages. Outages here are usually reported village by village, Centerville, Osterville, Marstons Mills and Cotuit, because they share feeders. If you add solar or storage, the interconnection goes to Eversource.

Which system fits a Osterville and Barnstable home?

We install all three, so we can recommend the one that suits the house and the budget.

RoseWater Energy

A large Osterville or Hyannis Port house with lighting control, AV, networking and security does not take a flicker well. A RoseWater HUB keeps those circuits on with zero transfer time and conditions the power between outages.

Whole-home battery backup with zero transfer time and power conditioning, for large homes where nothing can blink. Most projects run $125,000 to $1,000,000.

About RoseWater Energy

Savant Power

For a Cotuit or Centerville house that wants backup on chosen circuits rather than the whole house, Savant Power Modules go in the existing panel, Savant Power Storage carries the circuits you pick, and a licensed electrician installs both.

Relay modules in your existing panel and Savant Power Storage batteries, so you choose which circuits get backup power and see your usage in the Savant app. Modules typically run $2,000 to $10,000, and battery backup $10,000 to more than $100,000.

About Savant Power

Standby generator

For long outages a standby generator can stand behind either battery system and recharge it, or carry a smaller house on its own. Generators need clearance from windows and doors, which on tight village lots takes some planning.

A Generac or Kohler standby generator on natural gas or propane that starts on its own when the power goes out. Most installs run $7,500 to $20,000.

Where the equipment goes in Osterville and Barnstable

A December 2024 climate risk assessment by the Woodwell Climate Research Center found that areas around Centerville Harbor are among the most vulnerable to coastal flooding in town, with inundation deeper than 6.5 feet at Long Beach Road and Craigville Beach Road in a 100-year flood. It also named the coastal parts of Hyannis and Osterville among the largest projected increases in flood extent.

On a waterfront lot in Osterville or Hyannis Port, the HUB belongs in a garage or a raised mechanical room, not a basement. RoseWater's warranty does not cover water damage. A HUB needs about 3.5 feet of width, 3 feet of depth and 8 feet of height, plus 36 inches clear in front. If there is no room inside, the HUB40 can go outdoors in RoseWater's enclosure, and near salt water we review that spot with RoseWater's engineers first.

Permits in Osterville and Barnstable

Hyannis Port and Cotuit both have historic districts on the National Register, listed in 1987. Barnstable's building division issues separate electrical and gas permits, and the licensed electrician and gas fitter on the job file them. We have not found a Barnstable rule specific to generators or batteries.

How to start

For a RoseWater system, start with the Power Plan. For Savant Power, use the Savant quote form. For a standby generator, use the generator quote form. If you are not sure which one fits, use the contact form or call (781) 333-8003 and we will talk it through. We reply within one business day.

FAQ

Questions about backup power in Osterville and Barnstable

Can a HUB go in a house on Oyster Harbors or in Hyannis Port that sits close to the water?

Can a HUB go in a house on Oyster Harbors or in Hyannis Port that sits close to the water?

Yes, as long as it sits above the flood elevation. A garage or a raised mechanical room is the usual answer. The HUB40 can also go outdoors in RoseWater's enclosure, and near salt water we check the location with RoseWater's engineering team before we commit.

We are only in Osterville in summer. Does that change the design?

We are only in Osterville in summer. Does that change the design?

It can. A house that sits empty for months needs its network, heat, sump pumps and security to stay up without anyone there. The HUB keeps those running through outages, and we can set up remote access so you can check on things from wherever you are.

What does a RoseWater system cost for a Barnstable house?

What does a RoseWater system cost for a Barnstable house?

Most RoseWater projects run between $125,000 and $1,000,000. Where a Barnstable house lands in that range depends on its service size and the loads you protect. The Power Plan gives us what we need for a first design, and the site visit confirms it.
