Storms and outages in Wellfleet
In the February 2026 blizzard MEMA listed all 4,461 Wellfleet customers as out at 12:30 p.m. on February 23. MassLive reported that at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, February 25, two days later, Wellfleet was still at 100 percent out.
It is not every storm. On March 12, 2018, only 9 percent of Wellfleet was out at 9 p.m. while Harwich was at 98 percent, which shows how much depends on where the line breaks. In the October 27, 2021 nor'easter, a sole-source circuit failure on the Outer Cape blacked out all of Truro and Provincetown.
Who supplies the power
Eversource serves Wellfleet. Eversource describes the Outer Cape, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown, as served by a single distribution line, and it built a utility battery in Provincetown to back that line up. The battery sits at the far end, past Wellfleet. It supports Provincetown's grid. It does not keep Wellfleet houses on.

Where the equipment goes in Wellfleet
Since 2021, overwash at Duck Harbor has repeatedly flooded Old County Road and Bound Brook Island Road and cut off access to Bound Brook Island. A system for a house like that has to run with no one home and no way for a crew to reach it quickly.
Indoors, a battery cabinet goes in a garage or a dry utility room. A generator pad goes where it clears windows and doors, and for propane, where the delivery truck can reach the tank.
