Backup Power in
Quiet battery backup for Provincetown's tight historic lots, and standby generators where there is room, from Boston Backup Power in Norwood.
Get a Savant QuoteProvincetown is at the very end of the Cape and the very end of the power line. Eversource built a large battery here to keep the town going when the line fails, and it helps, but it was never meant to carry the town through a whole storm.
Lots in the center of town are small and houses sit close together, so a quiet battery system often fits better than a generator in the yard.
Boston Backup Power is a division of Boston Automations in Norwood. We design and install RoseWater Energy systems, Savant Power and Generac and Kohler standby generators, and licensed electricians and gas fitters make the connections.

Storms and outages in Provincetown
The battery has limits. In the February 2026 blizzard MEMA listed all 5,943 Provincetown customers as out at 12:30 p.m. on February 23, and 63 percent were still out on Wednesday morning. The town battery had been built for exactly that kind of line failure, and most of Provincetown was still dark two days after the storm.
In the October 27, 2021 nor'easter, a sole-source circuit failure on the Outer Cape took out all of Provincetown and Truro. In March 2018 Eversource listed 100 percent of Provincetown as out at 11:30 a.m. on March 12. Hurricane Bob brought sustained winds of 100 mph to Provincetown in 1991.
Who supplies the power
Eversource supplies Provincetown over a 13-mile distribution line that also serves Truro and Wellfleet. Eversource says customers there logged 45,000 outage hours over five years before it built the Outer Cape battery at the town transfer station instead of running a second line through the National Seashore.
Which system fits a Provincetown home?
We install all three, so we can recommend the one that suits the house and the budget.
RoseWater Energy
For a large waterfront house in the East or West End with a full technology package, a RoseWater HUB carries the whole house with zero transfer time.
Whole-home battery backup with zero transfer time and power conditioning, for large homes where nothing can blink. Most projects run $125,000 to $1,000,000.
Standby generator
Where the lot has room and the clearances work, a standby generator covers the long outages that the town battery cannot. It can also recharge a battery system.
A Generac or Kohler standby generator on natural gas or propane that starts on its own when the power goes out. Most installs run $7,500 to $20,000.
Where the equipment goes in Provincetown
The Provincetown Historic District covers about 300 acres and more than 1,000 buildings in the dense center between Route 6 and the harbor. Lots are small and houses are close together, which makes a battery inside the house easier to place than a generator outside it.
A RoseWater HUB needs a dry indoor spot, such as a basement that stays dry or a ground-floor storage room. A Savant Power Storage 20 is rated for indoor or outdoor use, but this close to salt water we put it indoors or in a garage, against a wall on a flat base away from any flooding. A generator needs clearance from windows and doors on both your house and the neighbor's, so we check the lot before suggesting one.
How to start
For a RoseWater system, start with the Power Plan. For Savant Power, use the Savant quote form. For a standby generator, use the generator quote form. If you are not sure which one fits, use the contact form or call (781) 333-8003 and we will talk it through. We reply within one business day.
Questions about backup power in Provincetown
Provincetown has a big utility battery. Why would we need our own?
Provincetown has a big utility battery. Why would we need our own?
The town battery backs up the Outer Cape line for part of an outage. In February 2026 most of the town was still dark on Wednesday. A battery in your house carries your own circuits, and it conditions your power the rest of the time.
We have a small house in the historic center. Will a system fit?
We have a small house in the historic center. Will a system fit?
Usually, yes. A Savant Power Storage 20 needs a flat spot against a wall with 36 inches clear in front, which a garage, basement or storage room can usually give, and the relay modules go in your existing panel. We look at the space and the panel on the site visit before suggesting a size.
Is a generator allowed on a tight Provincetown lot?
Is a generator allowed on a tight Provincetown lot?
It depends on the setbacks and on keeping the unit clear of windows, doors and vents. We look at the lot first, and if a generator does not fit we design around a battery instead.
