Harwich has had more than its share of big outages, from a 2019 tornado to a 2018 nor'easter that blacked out 98 percent of the town. When the lines come down here, the first things to protect are heat, water and a working kitchen.

Boston Backup Power is a division of Boston Automations in Norwood. We design and install RoseWater Energy systems, Savant Power and Generac and Kohler standby generators, and licensed electricians and gas fitters make the connections.

Storms and outages in Harwich

On July 23, 2019, an EF-1 tornado touched down in Yarmouth and then hit Harwich. Ninety percent of Harwich lost power and the town declared a state of emergency. Two days later, at 8 a.m. on July 25, Harwich still had 2,619 customers out, 23 percent of the town and the most of any town on the list.

Winter storms are the other half of it. On March 12, 2018, 98 percent of Harwich was out at 9 p.m., the highest share of any Cape town that night. In the February 2026 blizzard MEMA counted 8,589 Harwich customers out, 68 percent of the town, and by Tuesday morning the Chronicle had the figure at 78.6 percent.

Who supplies the power

Eversource supplies Harwich. The Cape Cod Chronicle reports Harwich outages as a share of Eversource customers. Harwich is also where the older of Nantucket's two undersea power cables comes ashore, though that cable serves the island, not the town.

Which system fits a Harwich home?

We install all three, so we can recommend the one that suits the house and the budget.

Standby generator

For most Harwich homes a Generac or Kohler standby generator is the practical answer. It starts by itself when the power fails and keeps the whole house or the essential circuits running for as long as the outage lasts.

A Generac or Kohler standby generator on natural gas or propane that starts on its own when the power goes out. Most installs run $7,500 to $20,000.

About standby generators

RoseWater Energy

For the larger houses on the water in Harwich Port with a lot of technology inside, a RoseWater HUB removes the gap entirely and conditions the power every day.

Whole-home battery backup with zero transfer time and power conditioning, for large homes where nothing can blink. Most projects run $125,000 to $1,000,000.

About RoseWater Energy

Savant Power

If you want backup without an engine running in the yard, or a smarter way to choose which circuits stay on, Savant Power adds relay modules to your panel and Savant Power Storage, and a permanently installed standby generator can recharge it.

Relay modules in your existing panel and Savant Power Storage batteries, so you choose which circuits get backup power and see your usage in the Savant app. Modules typically run $2,000 to $10,000, and battery backup $10,000 to more than $100,000.

Where the equipment goes in Harwich

Coastal flooding in Harwich is a street-level problem. In January 2024 the Herring River came over North Road and left residents stranded for more than six hours, the town closed Lothrop Avenue for flooding in three places, and there was serious flooding in Saquatucket, Wychmere and Allen harbors.

For a house near any of those harbors, set the generator pad above the flood level and keep the transfer switch and any battery out of a basement that takes water. Inland Harwich houses usually have an easy side-yard spot for the pad.

Permits in Harwich

Harwich does not publish a generator checklist that we found. A licensed electrician pulls the electrical permit, a licensed gas fitter pulls the gas permit, and if the generator runs on propane the fire department issues the tank permit and inspects it before it is filled.

How to start

For a RoseWater system, start with the Power Plan. For Savant Power, use the Savant quote form. For a standby generator, use the generator quote form. If you are not sure which one fits, use the contact form or call (781) 333-8003 and we will talk it through. We reply within one business day.

After the site visit and quote, the timing depends on permits and equipment availability. We file through our licensed electrician and gas fitter as soon as you approve the quote and schedule the install around the inspections.

We are near Wychmere Harbor. Is a generator safe in a flood zone?

We are near Wychmere Harbor. Is a generator safe in a flood zone?

It can be, if the pad is set above the flood level and the transfer switch is not in a basement that floods. We look at the lot and confirm the placement with the building department.

Natural gas or propane for a Harwich house?

Natural gas or propane for a Harwich house?

Use natural gas if the street has it, since you never run out. If not, a propane tank works well. The fire department permits and inspects the tank, and the tank size decides how many days the generator can run.
