Home Battery Cost What Does a Home Battery Cost in Massachusetts?

What a home battery costs in Massachusetts in 2026: the current price per kWh, what drives the number, and the incentives that are still available.

By Adam Zell of Boston Automations · Updated

The short answer

In two Greater Boston towns, EnergySage marketplace quotes updated October 18, 2026 put a 13 kWh home battery at about $15,900 to $20,150 before incentives. That works out to roughly $1,200 to $1,550 per kWh.

The federal 30% credit ended for systems placed in service after 2025. What is left in Massachusetts is the ConnectedSolutions payment for letting the utility use your battery on summer peaks, and 0% HEAT Loan financing.

What do batteries cost right now?

EnergySage publishes town-level battery prices from quotes on its marketplace. Two Greater Boston examples, both updated October 18, 2026:

EnergySage average battery prices before incentives, October 2026
TownPer kWh13 kWh systemTypical range
Hingham$1,222$15,889$13,506 to $18,272
Hyde Park (Boston)$1,550$20,150$17,128 to $23,172

These are marketplace averages, not a statewide figure, and they move from month to month. Treat them as a starting point.

What changes the price?

  • Storage size. More kWh costs more in total. Savant Power Storage starts at 20 kWh per unit and scales up.
  • Whole home or selected circuits. Backing up everything takes more storage and more inverter power than backing up essentials.
  • Electrical work.Panel space, a second panel for backed-up circuits, conduit runs and where the battery sits all change the electrician's labor.
  • Control. Adding circuit modules so the battery only carries what matters can let a smaller battery do the job.
  • Solar. Adding solar at the same time adds panels and coordination with your solar installer.

How can control lower the cost?

A battery sized to run everything at once is expensive. A battery that runs the essentials while load management keeps the pool heater, the EV charger and the second dryer off can be much smaller. That is the idea behind Savant Power: modules decide what the battery carries. Read how much battery backup a home needs to size by loads.

How does that compare with other backup?

For context, the standby generators we offer in Massachusetts usually run $7,500 to $20,000, installed. At the top of the market, RoseWater Energy systems, which condition every circuit with zero transfer time, usually fall between $125,000 and $1,000,000. Savant Power is what we recommend for homes that want batteries and circuit control on a budget below the RoseWater range. Savant Power Modules typically run $2,000 to $10,000, and Savant battery backup runs $10,000 to more than $100,000, depending on the size of the house and what you want backed up.

Is there still a federal tax credit for home batteries?

Is there still a federal tax credit for home batteries?

No, not for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. The IRS says the 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit is not available for property placed in service after that date.

Can a battery earn money in Massachusetts?

Yes, through ConnectedSolutions. Mass Save pays $275 per kW of a battery's average contribution during summer events, and estimates a typical 5 kW battery could earn up to $1,375 a year. Batteries also qualify for up to $25,000 of 0% HEAT Loan financing.

How much does Savant Power cost?

Savant Power Modules typically run $2,000 to $10,000, and Savant battery backup runs $10,000 to more than $100,000, depending on the size of the house and what you want backed up. What moves the number is how many circuits get modules, how much storage you add and the electrical work in your panel. We give a written quote after we see the panel and hear what you want to add.
