Generators and Savant Savant Power With a Standby Generator

How Savant Power works with a standby generator: which generators it supports, load shedding so a smaller unit carries the house, and pairing it with a battery.

By Adam Zell of Boston Automations · Updated

The short answer

Savant Power works with hardwired AC standby generators that have a 2-wire start. It does not support portable generators.

With a generator, Savant modules shed the big loads you choose while the generator runs, so the generator is not asked to carry everything at once and a smaller unit may do the job. Add Savant Power Storage and the battery picks up the house within moments of an outage, with the generator behind it for long outages.

What are the ways to pair Savant with a generator?

How does load shedding help a generator?

A generator has a fixed output. If the whole house tries to run central air, an EV charger, a dryer and an oven at once, the generator can overload. Savant watches the load and turns off the circuits you chose as lower priority while the generator is running, then turns them back on when there is room. Savant's compatibility guide says this needs the transfer switch's auxiliary contacts wired to the Power Director and a Current Track Module or Smart Energy Monitor on the main feed, so the system knows when the house is on generator power.

Generators have load management of their own, too. Generac says its Smart Management Modules can, in many cases, reduce the size and cost of a system. Savant adds circuit-level monitoring, outage scenes and battery control in the same app. More on the idea in home load shedding explained.

Why add a battery?

A standby generator takes several seconds to start and transfer, and it burns fuel the whole time it runs. A battery picks up the house within moments (Savant lists under 70 ms for the PS20) and carries it through that gap. Savant's compatibility guide covers a generator feeding the Savant inverter, so in a long outage the generator can keep the battery system going. Our guide on pairing a generator with a battery covers how the two share an outage.

Who does what?

We are an authorized Generac and Kohler partner and can supply the generator, or work with the one you have. A licensed electrician makes the electrical connections and a licensed gas fitter does the gas work. We design the Savant side, set the priorities with you and set up the app.

Frequently asked questions

Does Savant Power work with a standby generator?

Does Savant Power work with a standby generator?

Yes, with hardwired AC standby generators that have 2-wire start and stop, according to Savant's compatibility guide. Savant says portable generators are not supported at this time.

Can Savant manage loads on a generator without a battery?

Can Savant manage loads on a generator without a battery?

Yes. Savant documents a generator-only setup that uses a Savant Power Director or host controller, a signal from the automatic transfer switch, and grid and generator monitoring. Power Modules need version 3.5 or later for load shedding on a grid outage.

Can load management let me buy a smaller generator?

Can load management let me buy a smaller generator?

It can. When the system sheds large loads such as air conditioning, an EV charger or a dryer while the generator runs, the generator only has to carry what is left. Generac says its own load management can, in many cases, reduce the size and cost of a system. Your load calculation sets the final size.

Should I add a battery as well as a generator?

Should I add a battery as well as a generator?

A battery picks up the house within moments of a grid failure, well before a generator starts. Savant lists grid transfer for the PS20 in under 70 ms. Savant Power Storage supports hardwired generators with 2-wire start, so the generator can keep the battery system going in a long outage.
